Yes that’s a dirty pair of knickers cemented to the floor outside the patio window.  Found by my 4 year old granddaughter.  Not the only pair we found!

Review Picture 6 – No Strawberry Jam

Review Picture 6 – No Strawberry Jam

This made me laugh.  You can’t have strawberry jam because everyone keeps eating it and leaving the apricot.  Duh – try telling that to a 3 and 4 year old all week while everyone rummages down to the bottom for something they like

I booked as a disabled person.  Now I won’t turn this into a review of disabled facilities but suffice it to say that I struggled to get in the bathroom couldn’t reach the toilet roll and they put us at the farthest possible point from the restaurant.  It took us 20 minutes to walk each day with 3 kids under 5!  Past everything that cost money!

Review Pictures taken from the corner showing the Pavilion so far in the distance you can barely see it and our accommodation at the furthest point the other way plus the typical squalor and dirt on route.See Butlins Cheap Deal for the truth about how cheap it really is (or isn’t).  You can see what we passed on our way to breakfast –   exactly the sort of thing you should know from a holiday review.

Review about Butlins (Minehead)

Review Picture 7 – This is supposed to be suitable for disabled?

Good entertainment poor accommodation and food

Review from cipenman about Butlins (Minehead) th August

Rating Advantages Keeps the kids happy

Disadvantages Room very poor not clean even after 5 complaints

Summary: Very poor room poor maintenance and very poor cleaning   Full review

We accepted the fact that the room needed redecorating etc but did not accept that it was dirty. There was mould all around the shower and the sink the carpets did not look like they had been cleaned for a while the skirting boards were think with dust as were door frames etc doors and walls were covered in splash marks and finger marks there were cobwebs in over the ceilings. On top of this the ceilings were cracked plaster was missing from the corner of walls skirting boards badly in need of painting the sink was cracked there was no plug or bin the sheets and bed covers were ripped and the pillows were stained.

This was a silver room which was meant to be better than standard! I complained on the Sunday and was told that there were no cleaners in on Sundays and that it would be cleaned on Monday. It was not cleaned on Monday but not wanting to complain I waited until Tuesday afternoon. Still nobody had been in so I complained again and was told that someone would come around to see us. Someone arrived about 15 minutes later with a bin and left. We waited for someone else but nobody arrived and we went back out again for the evening.

Wednesday came and a cleaner arrived All they did was clean Hoover the carpet around anything left on the floor and made 2 of the 5 beds ! I complained again about this and was told that I would have to call back again the following morning and speak to a manager. So Thursday came and I spoke to a manager who said they would come to see us in 10 to 15 minutes they arrived 35 minutes later. I told them of the problems and they told me it would be cleaned properly that day.

When we got back to the room we found that it had been cleaned slightly better than before but not particularly well. I rang up and complained again and a cleaning team was sent around immediately. Even after this team had been most of the walls and doors were still dirty there was still think dust on most of the skirting boards and still mould in the bathroom. I was given an £80 refund ( holiday cost £964) for the problems but this was not sufficient in my view. We certainly would not go back to Butlins again

From Cozumel Mexico to Cuzco Peru, there is no place better than Latin America. The people are wonderful, the traditions are colorful, and the food is unmatched. The ruins of Machu Picchu, the underwater paradises of Cozumel, swimming with dolphins in Honduras, diving with sea turtles in Belize, exploring the Amazon Rainforest, there are so many majestic places and not enough time to explore and discover the hidden treasures of this planet.

In the fast paced world we live in, when is the last time you wondered what sitting in a little wooden boat fishing for piranhas would be like? The cultures of Latin America are all different and special in their own way, but they all have one thing in common. They love each other. To their friends, they are all brothers and sisters. Whether abroad or at home there are opportunities to learn about different cultures and to broaden our knowledge of the world. It is important for us to take advantage of every opportunity we have.

Dolphin Watching & Whale Watching

Are there  dolphins at Dolphin Beach Resort?

The Dolphin Beach Resort is the perfect destination for your next getaway. Once the sun sets, get ready for a great night out, and only a short walk away, you’ll find fabulous restaurants, Unique boutiques and shops.

Jump  to Dolphin Slideshow

Bottlenose dolphins are probably the only dolphin species you’ll get to see at St. Pete Beach. It’s quite noticeable that there is very little mention of this on Dolphin Beaches own website. The nearby Clearwater Beach may be a better choice for seeing dolphins – home to several species of dolphins, including Bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins, and Risso’s dolphins.

Dolphin Watching & Whale Watching

What is the best time to see dolphins?

The best time to go dolphin watching in this area is during the months of April to October. If you want to see dolphins (and whales) a holiday to Tenerife in the Canary Islands could be a good choice. In South Tenerife you can see whales and dolphins all year round. Summer weather is good but many prefer the more moderate winter weather. More about Tenerife Weather.

Sea Turtles

Five different sea turtles species are found in Florida’s waters and nesting on the beaches. All sea turtles found in Florida are protected under state statutes. More about the Turtles

Cottages with Hot Tubs

Those of us that live in the UK know full well what our weather can be like – and I lived there for more than 60 years so trust me, I know!  We avoid 9 months of the year for UK holidays because we just can’t rely on it and even when we think we can we often find it lets us down, especially with cold, wet or windy evenings.  Holiday abroad were good value for money taking that into account but that was pre 2020.  Now we have to worry about COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and staying home for the holidays seem a safer bet.

Hot tubs have always been an added luxury but now it’s almost a necessity as more and more people want to stay in the UK for cottage holidays.  Having a heated hot tub not only means you aren’t affected so much by seasonal changes and makes for a great from the warmest summer through to the cold winter.

Make sure you check your rental terms though.  Having an efficiently heated hot tub is important.  Older model hot tubs may take a long time to heat up and may not be cost effective if you have to pay the electricity.  Even if it’s included, you seriously don’t want to wait 8 hours for your hot tub to be usable.  An inefficient or uncovered hot tub can easily take twice the time to heat and poor insulation will cool it quickly especially in winter.  So bottom line – ask about your hot tub!

La Gomera Walking

La Gomera Walking Holiday

Walking Holiday 8 Days & 7 Nights

Discover the botanical paradise of La Gomera on foot. La Gomera, the greenest of the Canary Islands, lies just 30 kilometres off the coast of Tenerife, but is a world away in terms of atmosphere and landscape. Steep cliffs along the rocky coastline give way to volcanic peaks inland and deep gorges, or barrancos, limit access to many parts of the island. La Gomera’s greatest treasures are found in the Garajonay National Park, among the dense vegetation of its mysterious laurel woods, where centuries-old trees clothed in moss give the impression of a tropical rain forest. In the valleys sculpted landscapes of terraces of banana, papaya and mango trees are equally beautiful. The rugged coast of steep cliffs and small coves are another delight.

Accommodation

You will spend two nights in San Sebastian, at the beautiful 4* Parador hotel and five nights in comfortable rural hotels. All are good family run hotels, with an authentic atmosphere and great hospitality. The rooms are simply but comfortably decorated and have en suite bathrooms. The hotels in Vallehermoso and Hermigua are favourites as the buildings are beautifully converted manor houses.

La Gomera Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do a day trip to La Gomera from Tenerife?

You can book an excursion to La Gomera from Tenerife in an air-conditioned bus with a lunch included. From South Tenerife (picked up from most hotels) the bus will take the ferry to San Sebastián de La Gomera. You will then have a guided tour of the island – the whole trip lasting around 10 hours.

Can you swim on La Gomera?

The longest beach of the island is the holiday resort Valle Gran Rey, which is a good kilometre long and you can swim there almost all year round. The beach of the island capital San Sebastian is beautiful and rarely crowded. However, do be careful -not everywhere can you jump into the waves all year round, as the currents can become very strong especially in winter. There is also a small unofficial nudist beach, the idyllic Playa del Ingles in the small holiday resort Valle Gran Rey.

Can you walk around La Gomera?

Absolutely you can. La Gomera is an island that welcomes visitors and has many walking and hiking trails. You can go with a guided excursion or take the ferry. However, if you go on foot it will be hard to see much of the island. An overnight stay is recommended or get in touch with a tour guide who can offer advice on the best walking trails.

Do you need a car to get around La Gomera?

Renting a car is the better option if you want to pack in as much as possible. The bus (guagua, sounds like waw-waw) is the cheapest option for getting around La Gomera but you will have to keep an eye on timetables – it’s easy to miss the ferry back – unless, of course, you are staying on Gomera.

Does La Gomera have nice beaches?

La Gomera is not your typical beach holiday island but there are some small and idyllic bathing spots. Most beaches consist of coarse or fine gravel plus many beaches with fine black lava sand, which is frequently seen on Tenerife beaches. If you spend most of your time on the beach then Tenerife will probably suit you better!

How deep is the sea between Tenerife and La Gomera?

The ocean between the steep volcanic islands of Tenerife and La Gomera is over 3 kilometres deep. Recreational swimming from Tenerife to La Gomera would not make much sense. Swimmer David Mecca swam from La Gomera to Tenerife, a distance of 44kms in only 8 hours. An achievement indeed but not recommended for amateur swimmers!

How do you get to Gomera island?

Although La Gomera has an airport, it is only for flights between the islands, so to get there from Europe, you’ll have to change flights in Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Most holidaymakers land at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), then a ferry from the port of Los Cristianos or Santa Cruz de Tenerife to La Gomera. It takes about 30 minutes by taxi or rental car from Tenerife South Airport to the port of Los Cristianos. Unless you want to spend time in Santa Cruz, that would be the sensible option.

Is there a ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera?

The ferry route from Los Cristianos, Tenerife to La Gomera usually runs several times a day throughout the year. Most ferries arrive at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera, provided by Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas. Travel time from Tenerife to La Gomera ranges between 50 min to 1 hr, depending on the crossing you’ve chosen. The fastest ferry reaches the island in 50 min.

How much is the ferry from La Gomera to Tenerife?

Ferry prices from Tenerife to La Gomera start at around €43. The total cost may vary depending on available offers and discounts, seat type and vehicle. Travel time from Tenerife to La Gomera ranges between 50 min to 1 hr, depending on the crossing you’ve chosen. The port of Los Cristianos can get quite busy during the summer. We recommend arriving at least 1.5 hr before boarding, especially if you are traveling with a vehicle.

What is the best time of year to visit La Gomera?

For the highest temperatures the best time to visit La Gomera is between July and September although the sub tropical climate offers sunshine throughout the year . Unless you are a real sun lover, you may find winter more comfortable, especially if travelling with children. In the north of La Gomera the climate is always a little cooler due to the trade winds and it rains a little more.

What is the main town in La Gomera?

San Sebastián de La Gomera is the capital of La Gomera in the Canary Islands. It is also home to the main harbour where you can find boat trips for various activities including whale and dolphin watching. Italian explorer Christopher Columbus stayed in San Sebastián de la Gomera, the capital of the island, before setting off on his voyage to the Americas; La Gomera’s nickname is La Isla Columbiana.
