Peaceful and beautiful. This is La Gomera, known as “Isla Mágica” (the magical island). It is the second smallest of the Canary Islands, measuring barely 20 kilometres from north to south. It is an ecological treasure, and its coast is dotted with small beaches set between cliffs.
The 370-sq-km volcanic island is crisscrossed with fantastic hiking and cycling routes while the 100-km coastline is dotted with charming black-sand beaches. San Sebastián de la Gomera, on the east coast, is the main port and capital. It is sheltered and is surrounded by the steep cliffs of a wide ravine. It was the last stopping place of Christopher Columbus on his first transatlantic voyage, in 1492. La Gomera is famous for the whistling language once used by natives of the island to communicate from hilltop to hilltop.
