Map from Sharm El Sheik Airport

Getting to/from the Sharm El Sheikh Airport

By Car: The airport is located 18 kilometers (11 miles) to the North-East from the Sharm El Sheikh resort-city at the highway (the El-Salam street) leading through the airport along the recreation area of Sharm El Sheikh. The airport buildings are perfectly noticeable from the highway and it’s impossible to miss them. The two passenger terminals are situated one behind another.

Route to the airport – see map

By Taxi: Taxi ranks are located next to the passenger Terminal 1. Taxi offers 24-hour services. The car can take you to the Sharm El Sheikh hotels, the residential neighborhood of the town and to the neighboring resorts. It’s possible to order a taxi to the airport just for the arrival time. Taxi order number is 122 with any mobile carrier. It’s better to settle with the taxi-driver the price for transfer beforehand in order not to be cheated. As a rule luggage is included into the transfer price.

By Bus: Regular transportation in Sharm El Sheikh is carried out by private carriers offering the passengers only minibuses. The bus stops are located next to the Sharm El Sheikh airport passenger Terminal 1. The Sharm El Sheikh public transport is peculiar of the absence of fixed stops on the route, pick-up and drop-off is made on demand. The buses start from the airport filled up. It’s better to settle with the bus-driver the price for transfer before the departure in order not to be cheated. It takes about 15 minute drive to the center of the Sharm El Sheikh city.

It’s around 300 miles from Cairo to Sharm, but security at the moment is tight. More than once military checkpoints require bleary-eyed passengers to disembark into the gloom and line up, bags open for inspection.

There are numerous things to do to make your time in Sharm El-Sheikh a memorable one. The city is home to the most fascinating landscapes of Sinai Peninsula and the Red Sea. You can spend the day sunbathing at one of the best beaches in the world, explore the local culture wandering around the Old Town, go hiking on Mount Sinai or embark on an adventure to the deep seas and discover the underwater treasures at many diving spots, particularly at Ras Mohammed Marine Park. There are also many historical treasures in the region such as St. Catherine’s Monastery sits at the foot of Mt. Sinai, Sharm Old Market and Al-Sahaba Mosque.

As regular visitors to Egypt we bring you the latest reviews on the Luxor restaurants. During our most recent visit, returning only a couple of days ago, we sampled the delights of many excellent restaurants (and one or two not so good but I will come to those later). The standard and service of one, however, stood out way above the rest, Jewel of the Nile.  In our opinion the creme de la creme of Luxor restaurants.

Jewel of the Nile - Luxor Restaurant

Jewel of the Nile is owned and managed by Laura and her Egyptian husband Mahmoud.  Mahmoud and Alla are responsible for the excellent food they serve up whilst Laura does an exceptional job looking after the customers front of house.
Jewel Of The Nile Luxor

Jewel of the Nile is rated number one of the Luxor restaurant. Jewel of the Nile is situated in the quieter part of town where you can relax and enjoy a pleasant evening away from the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist areas.  I say pleasant evening rather than a pleasant meal because the friendly welcome and excellent company of the staff will leave you wanting to linger after your meal is finished.  Although the restaurant is not particularly large you never feel rushed (as we were in some of the other restaurants).  Although we didn’t book our table I note from other reviews Jewel of the Nile is ranked number one of the Luxor restaurants  so you may want to book in advance to be sure of a table.  Telephone number listed below.Laura - Owner of the Jewel of the Nile Restaurant

Not only do Laura and Mahmoud serve up delicious fresh locally produced food at astoundingly reasonable prices (full menu and prices to follow, you have the added bonus of Laura’s extensive knowledge from living in Luxor to assist customers.  Don’t let Laura’s cheery youthful appearance fool you she has over 20 years experience in the restaurant business together with a wealth of information on Egypt which is only too happy to share, if asked, not only advising on the cheaper options to the overpriced trips offered by some of the tour operators but actually helping to make the arrangements.  In fact while we were there she even helped a gentlemen by arranging flights to Cairo on the internet.

Laura’s passion for helping not only extends to customers but also the animals of Luxor.  As well as holding quiz nights to raise money for a local animal hospital there is a discrete leaflet, almost hidden amongst the salt and pepper pots on each table, providing information on the excellent work being done to improve the care of animals in Egypt.  This passion to help is not forced on you or even discussed unless a customer shows and interest, and even then you feel no obligation.  Whilst I realise this has nothing to do with the food I feel I had to mention this to give you an idea of the lovely welcome you experience when dining at the Jewel of the Nile.  Good food alone doesn’t always mean an enjoyable evening.

Staff at the famous Luxor Restaurant - The Jewel of the NileAnyway back to the restaurant itself, as I mentioned the restaurant itself is in the quieter part of town, so unless you know about it in advance you may not find it so I have added directions for you at the bottom of the page.  Most of the restaurants in Luxor rely on passing trade a luxury that this restaurant doesn’t have, so I find it quite amazing that this restaurant has gained number one status merely on recommendations.  Congratulations Jewel in the Nile, I was about to wish you continued good luck but you don’t need it your restaurant speaks for itself, so all I’ll say is a heartfelt thank you for the best two evenings we had in Luxor.

I’ve been rambling on about evenings but I should just mention that Jewel in the Nile is open from 10.00 in the morning until midnight every day, not just the evenings.

Jewel Of The Nile Luxor – Jewel of the Nile is rated number one of the Luxor restaurants.

Jewel Of The Nile Luxor  Jewel of the Nile is rated number one of the Luxor restaurant.

On our return to Luxor this year we visited as many restaurants as possible to enable us to provide a detailed review on the best and shall we say the ‘not so good’ restaurants on offer.  We visited Luxor restaurants to suit all pockets to able us to give a comprehensive view for Egypt tourists.  Although we have frequented some of these old established restaurants for numerous years we returned to our top 3 restaurants before leaving Luxor to ensure that we could confirm that the quality of the food and service was consistent.  For up to date, genuine unbiased information and comments we list below our findings.

Jewel Of The Nile Luxor  Jewel of the Nile is rated number one of the Luxor restaurant.

For comfortable surroundings, delicious food and friendly service this is without doubt is the first restaurant you should visit on arriving in Luxor.  You’ll be amazed at the warm welcome you’ll receive on arrival, with genuine Egyptian and International cuisine on offer, all freshly prepared, you won’t  fail to be pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the cost of your meal will be.   (read our full review)

No. 2 Best Restaurant in Luxor – Maxim’s

Long established restaurant providing excellent food and service in pleasant surroundings, again at very reasonable prices. (read our full review)

No. 3 Best Restaurant in Luxor – Jems

Top class food from a top class chef. This very under-rated restaurant suffers from a poor frontage, which I feel sadly puts people off.  Do try it though I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.  Albert the owner will prepare you mouth-watering food again at a price that’s easy on the pocket. No 1 Worst Restaurant in Luxor – The Lantern Luxor

Once a very popular restaurant with returning visitors to Luxor, we found this restaurant to be overpriced, food of poor quality, although plentiful, and staff with selective hearing when the quick round of ‘have you enjoyed your meal’ is nightly banded about. The standards of this restaurant have slipped to say the very least, certainly one to avoid.  (read our full review)

No.2 Worst Restaurant in Luxor – Castello

Newly opened this restaurant seems to have more than a few teething problems, we would give this one a miss for the time being.  Maybe they will turn things around given time. (read our full review)

Trip Advisor deleted my review

We have recently had some very disturbing emails from a number of holiday makers we met whilst in Luxor.  These people have no connection with one another or with this site  other than the fact that they, like us, were staying at the Hotel Nile Palace and we all got talking about where was good to eat and we spent an hour or two reading Trip Advisor reviews on my laptop in the bar.

There were half a dozen restaurants we pretty much all tried and found without exception that The Jewel in the Nile was excellent and the Lantern varied between extremely disappointing to totally revolting.  Now I rarely post to Trip Advisor – I have enough to do maintaining my websites, but when I heard reports back from the people we had met saying that every time they posted a couple of good review and a bad one, their reviews were removed, I decided to post my own.

I gave an excellent review to the Jewel of the Nile, Jems and Maxims, a reasonable one for Snobs and one or two others and a poor one for the Lantern. Sure enough my reviews were posted then 2 weeks later they were all deleted without explanation.

There has been some suggestion that if a hotel or restaurant complains after a poor review, suggesting that a competitor is behind it, Trip Advisor will take the easy route and remove the reviews.  I can’t comment as to whether this is true or not.  I do know that all those who had reviews removed  complained and were told they didn’t meet the guidelines.  What utter rubbish.  I have a long standing account on Tripadvisor and although I don’t post much, I have posted about other areas including places like Sri Lanka.  I could hardly be mistaken for the owner of the Jewel or Jems posting their own fake reviews.

If poor hotels and restaurants can manipulate the system like this it’s about time Trip Advisor looked at there procedures.

If this has happened to you, please drop us a line.
