Butlins Holiday - Review - Faulty TV Reception

Review Picture 1 – Pathetic TV

So here are a few pictures that let you know how I feel about Butlins starting with the glorious tatty TV that went off the air 3 days out of 5.

Review of Butlins Skegness - Shower Mould

Review Picture 2 – Mouldy Shower Tray – I cleaned it myself!

Review - Dirty Soap Dish

Review Picture 3 – Disgusting Soap Tray

Think this must have there when I was a child – 40 years ago.

Holiday Review - Dirty Sink at Butlins

Review Picture 4 – Dirty Sink

Butlins Review - dirty knickers

Review Picture 5 – Dirty Knickers

Yes that’s a dirty pair of knickers cemented to the floor outside the patio window.  Found by my 4 year old granddaughter.  Not the only pair we found!

Review Dining Room at Butlins

Review Picture 6 – No Strawberry Jam

Review Picture 6 – No Strawberry Jam

This made me laugh.  You can’t have strawberry jam because everyone keeps eating it and leaving the apricot.  Duh – try telling that to a 3 and 4 year old all week while everyone rummages down to the bottom for something they like

I booked as a disabled person.  Now I won’t turn this into a review of disabled facilities but suffice it to say that I struggled to get in the bathroom couldn’t reach the toilet roll and they put us at the farthest possible point from the restaurant.  It took us 20 minutes to walk each day with 3 kids under 5!  Past everything that cost money!

Review Pictures taken from the corner showing the Pavilion so far in the distance you can barely see it and our accommodation at the furthest point the other way plus the typical squalor and dirt on route.See Butlins Cheap Deal for the truth about how cheap it really is (or isn’t).  You can see what we passed on our way to breakfast –   exactly the sort of thing you should know from a holiday review.

Review about Butlins (Minehead)

Review Picture 7 – This is supposed to be suitable for disabled?

Good entertainment poor accommodation and food

Review from cipenman about Butlins (Minehead) th August

Rating Advantages Keeps the kids happy

Disadvantages Room very poor not clean even after 5 complaints

Summary: Very poor room poor maintenance and very poor cleaning   Full review

We accepted the fact that the room needed redecorating etc but did not accept that it was dirty. There was mould all around the shower and the sink the carpets did not look like they had been cleaned for a while the skirting boards were think with dust as were door frames etc doors and walls were covered in splash marks and finger marks there were cobwebs in over the ceilings. On top of this the ceilings were cracked plaster was missing from the corner of walls skirting boards badly in need of painting the sink was cracked there was no plug or bin the sheets and bed covers were ripped and the pillows were stained.

This was a silver room which was meant to be better than standard! I complained on the Sunday and was told that there were no cleaners in on Sundays and that it would be cleaned on Monday. It was not cleaned on Monday but not wanting to complain I waited until Tuesday afternoon. Still nobody had been in so I complained again and was told that someone would come around to see us. Someone arrived about 15 minutes later with a bin and left. We waited for someone else but nobody arrived and we went back out again for the evening.

Wednesday came and a cleaner arrived All they did was clean Hoover the carpet around anything left on the floor and made 2 of the 5 beds ! I complained again about this and was told that I would have to call back again the following morning and speak to a manager. So Thursday came and I spoke to a manager who said they would come to see us in 10 to 15 minutes they arrived 35 minutes later. I told them of the problems and they told me it would be cleaned properly that day.

When we got back to the room we found that it had been cleaned slightly better than before but not particularly well. I rang up and complained again and a cleaning team was sent around immediately. Even after this team had been most of the walls and doors were still dirty there was still think dust on most of the skirting boards and still mould in the bathroom. I was given an £80 refund ( holiday cost £964) for the problems but this was not sufficient in my view. We certainly would not go back to Butlins again

Does Butlins have a Gym?

Butlins Spa Weekends

The Ocean Spa is the perfect place to experience fun and relaxation. Created to capture the essence of Butlin’s, it’s amazingly relaxed but still delivers our sense of humour. The Spa facilities are based upon the spa principles of warming, heating and cooling the body to leave you feeling rejuvenated, refreshed and revitalised. There’s a wide range of treatments and packages available at the Ocean Spa, so whether you’re looking for a quick treat or a full on pamper session there’s something you’ll love.

Look out for these colours whilst in our spa. 2 Hour Spa Experience   Your spa experience includes full use of the spa facilities: You will be provided with a locker, a robe, a towel and a gift of towelling slippers for the duration of your session. Chilled water and fruit are available free of charge. Soft drinks, teas and coffees are available to purchase during the afternoon.

Unfortunately no alcohol is permitted within the spa. Disabled changing room and a walk in wet room, and a hoist available for any guests that require help getting in and out of the water. 13-17 year olds are welcome to enjoy this experience, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Does Butlins have a Gym?

What did I enjoy more than anything at Butlins?

Hitting the Gym every day.

Although I must say this was in spite of the service not because of it.  No-one asked me if I wanted an induction or to be shown how any of the equipment worked.  On the two occasions I asked no interest was shown in helping me fathom out how to use the equipment.  It was left to other fitness enthusiasts to help me set the equipment up.  Very poor – what would have happened if I had had an accident or pulled a muscle.?

The equipment was good although the air conditioning left a lot to be desired.  There were no towels provided although I found out late in the week you could take a shower if you took your own.  Pity no-one told me that.

There was no water jar which I found very odd.  Apparently it’s for health and safety reasons because of electrical equipment although every other gym or fitness facility I’ve ever been in has water in the facility.  It’s another silly rule like the one that say’s you can’t help yourself in the dining room.  Their version – health and safety – my version?  Heaven forbid you should take two slices of meat instead of one!  But I digress.  Back to the fitness room and water.

When I first asked I was bought a plastic glass which I drank in the gym.  However next day I was told I had to keep coming outside to drink it.  Crazy!  It was warm enough in the fitness room but outside it was baking since the pool was open plan.  Just what you need in the middle of working out!  Especially when the next person in takes a drink in and no-one says a word!

Another point is that ‘drinks’ are free although no-one actually bothers to tell you that.  No big deal though – water or very weak orange squash.

Anyway enough about the fitness suite and equipment.  I did enjoy it.  It was a few peaceful moments in an otherwise crappy Butlins holiday.

Butlins Skegness

History of Skegness

Skegness mid 50’s

Before the late 1800’s Skegness was little more than an insignificant coastal village. Wainfleet some 5 miles inland had a far more coloured history than  neighbouring Skegness. Events really began to take off at the turn of the century with the development of the railway networks and for the first time ordinary working people from the midlands could economically visit the coast and enjoy the miles of golden beaches and fresh air. Thus early Skegness tourism was born. The town was possibly at the height of its popularity in the 1920’s and 1930’s prior to the mass ownership of motor cars following World War 2.

Butlins Cheap Deal 1Find out all about Butlins Cheap Deals and Holidays at this website.  Book your cheap deal holidays from here but don’t make it a Butlins Cheap Deal!

I’m not going to say too much about Butlins Cheap Deal.  I’m more inclined to let the pictures tell the story.  You might want to have a look at Butlins Prices too.  If all you want is a cheap deal then you may not be interested in which case go book your Butlins Cheap Deal.  If like me you think there is a big difference between cheap and cheerful and cheap and nasty then take a look at these pictures.

I have snapped everything on one side of the walk way from the half way point between our accommodation and where we had to walk to to eat.  Not many ‘deals’ that I could see and certainly not cheap when you add up how much kids can ask for.  It’s all money money money and NOTHING is cheap if you like value for money.  The only thing I’ve missed out is the Spa and you won’t find any cheap deals there unless you buy a spa break for 2 days after you’ve already bought your Butlins cheap deal for the week.

Is this Cheap???

You may think this is cheap at £1.50 but then that’s for 10 minutes so half an hour is £4.50.  If you have 3 kids that’s £13.50 before you’ve even had breakfast!  Not my idea of cheap.

Billys Funs House – a real fun deal but is it cheap at £1.50 for 10 minutes?

Not a cheap deal exactly as it costs nothing to walk in but wait and see if you can get in and out without buying anything.

Butlins Cheap Deal 5

Talk about maximising profits – £1 to buy a Cappuccino.  Good deal?  Not in my book.  Make it in your chalet or have it free at breakfast.

Butlins Cheap Deal 6

Wow – how’s that for a family friendly package.  While Mom and the kids enjoy their not so cheap deal Dad can blow what’s left of the spending money in the bookies.

Butlins Cheap Deal 7

Self Catering?  Why not buy breakfast for £6 or £3 for kids.  Evening meals at £9 and £6 for kids.  2 adults and 3 children?  £57 per day.  So either max out on your credit card (you can always look a cheap transfer deal to another card maybe discount some of the high interest when you get home and can’t afford to pay it off) or how’s this for a good deal?  Dad can go down the bookies and Mom can spend all holiday cooking and washing up!

Butlins Cheap Deal 8

Well I suppose it depends what you’re used to spending on booze?  Is £9.60 for a 4 pint pitcher a cheap deal ?  I rather have a nice bottle of wine but no deals there!

Butlins Cheap Deal 9

At £2 a try here’s another good deal right where you enter the pavilion for breakfast and evening meal.

Butlins Cheap Deal 10

Cheap at £3?  I suppose so until you realise you haven’t got to breakfast yet and the kids already have a long list of all these ‘cheap’ things they want to come back and do.

Butlins Cheap Deal 11

Butlins Cheap Deal 12

I’m not saying a word about whether it’s cheap or a good deal but do you really think you’ll get them off it after one go?

Butlins Cheap Deal 13

Stuff you own toy.  Novel  but why would you want to.  No idea how much this cost – never saw any takers.

Butlins Cheap Deal 14

Just keep buying and spending.

Butlins Cheap Deal 15

Nothing cheap to buy in here!

Butlins Cheap Deal 16

Welcome to the house of fun.  Bring your wallet and credit card with you.

Butlins Cheap Deal 17

Gosh can we do something for free later this morning?  Yes meet Pingu or Bob the builder for free – UNLESS the kids want their pictures to take home then it’s £5 each.

Butlins Cheap Deal 18

Billy Bear Goody Package £15.  You can get this sort of stuff by spending a couple of quid in the pound store much cheaper.

Butlins Cheap Deal 19

This was free but we could never get to see it as it was only on for a short while and always clashed with meal times.

Butlins Cheap Deal 20

Only £1?  Now that’s CHEAP!!!!

When it comes to Butlins Holidays   that says it all!

If you are looking for a Butlins Holiday then this is the place for you.  Find out all you need to know about Butlins and their Holidays before making your mind up.  If you decide to book a Butlins holiday after reading this well good luck to you! Do you remember Butlins Holidays from years gone by?  Me too.  I am 68 and I had my first Butlins Holiday when I could barely walk.  I have to say I haven’t been since my teens until I decided to take a holiday with my grandchildren.

I thought Butlins would be a great family holiday for the kids and good for ‘Mom and Dad’ since they wouldn’t be shelling out money left right and centre.

How wrong could I be thinking Butlins Nostalgia was a good idea.

Now I’m not saying my views on Butlins Holidays will necessarily be yours but if you recognise yourself when you read my review then you may want to think twice before making the same mistake I did. I went to Butlins Skegness but reading other peoples views of their holidays at Butlins it doesn’t look like the other resorts are any better.

Butlins Holidays are not for me and frankly if you’re reading this far I doubt Butlins will be for you either. Butlins Cheap Deal?  Read what I think of Butlins Cheap Holiday Deal.

Butlins Late Deal – one of the few free activities.

Here are photo’s of the few happy moments of our holiday on our Butlins Late Deal.  Frankly it was a late booking but it wasn’t much of a deal!

The soft play area, see above and below, was not open late so we found limited things to do with the kids in the evening.  One of the stupid things was that they tried to tell us that my granddaughter, who is 4, was too big.  They wanted her to go in one side and her brother aged 3, to go in the other.  Then my son-in-law, who was totally p****’d off with their attitude and the distress they caused the children, spent the next hour playing with them both, and guess what, he’s 6 foot and no-one said a word!  See Immy below, a normal 4 year old!

Butlins Late Deal - negotiating the steps with pushchairStairs - Late Deals at Butlins

And while we’re still on the subject of  ‘late’, nothing to do with a late deal at all, but just another niggle.  After a long walk from our accommodation, we eventually found the Crazy Horse Saloon with 10 minutes to spare before the bingo started.  Yes you’ve guessed it.  We were too LATE!  They saw us arrive and quickly put the tickets out of sight, telling us, ‘sorry, you’re too late’.

So there you have it.  In my view Butlins Late Deals are not good deals and you’d be better of looking elsewhere!

Redcoats at Butlins

Modern Day Redcoats

Richard on duty at Butlins Ocean Drive

Well strictly speaking I don’t think Richard is a Redcoat but he really was just about the only person I found pleasant and helpful.  He always had a cheery smile which is more than can be said for the rest of the staff.

If you think you are going to find lots of Butlins Redcoats with happy smiling faces, think again.  Most of the staff are Polish or Lithuanian, with a smattering of other Eastern European Countries.  About half of them are polite and doing their best with inadequate English.  The other half are miserable as sin and can’t wait to leave Butlins and go home.

We saw comparatively few Red Coats and they bore no resemblance to the Redcoats of old.  My grandson was frightened to death when one of them bounced up and down and shrieked and shouted, trying to get him to look at the camera so they could take a photo with Bob the Builder.

Bob the Builder and Butlins Red Coats

You might wonder why the Redcoat was so keen to get the photo.  Well that’s because they charge £5 for it.  What a surprise!  (See Butlins Cheap Deal for the truth about just how much you can really spend at Butlins.)

Back to the Butlins Redcoats.  I apologise to those Redcoats that are good at their job – unfortunately I didn’t meet you – the rest are just going through the motions and are more interested in their sex life than looking after the holiday-makers.

Although not Redcoats either, you may want to hear about staff at the Butlins Spa I had after using the Fitness Suite.
