      The Hill Club Hotel

“An eccentric guesthouse/hotel which made a welcome and enjoyable break from the intense heat in the rest of Sri Lanka. Everything very old fashioned and full of character. The rooms were a good size with both a bath and shower and the food was lovely. Four course dinner was $17 plus service charges. There is a pool table and internet”

“Stayed here as part of our tour package and booked by the tour operator. Arrived just on dusk in the rain so couldn’t appreciate the view of the hotel. After a very “old world” check in reminiscent of days gone by we were shown to our room. Wooden floorboards make for noisy guests. And cold. Thankfully there was a radiator “

“Reminded us of a scottish shooting lodge and even has a map of the whisky trail on the wall. Good if you are after atmosphere and service rather than modern facilities. For example there is no tea maker in the room but tea in the room is available on request and a hot water bottle is put in your bed”

“We just returned after spending 4 nights at the Hill Club. The weather was perfect for what we had planned. It was chilly and there was a light drizzle throughout the day during the first 2 days but we had planned to visit Ambewela Farm Hakgala Gardens and Tea Factory Hotel so the weather was not a problem. On the”

“We stayed for two nights at the Hill Club. Right from the time we first saw the the hotel as we drove up we were hooked. It’s like stepping back in time to a slower paced more gracious era. The gardens are well maintained and alive with flowers. The real highlight of the stay was dinner. Food was excellent and”

“This old club Its a bit differnt than the usual place (I poked my head in St andrews which looks better). Drinks are very expensive here compared with any where else in Sri Lanka we stayed (Double) The place is full of dead animals heads on the wall I t is a proper old hunting lodge feel. the rooms and”

“Slightly dubious after the previous reviews but we had a fab 3 night stay – despite turning up on the day and being in our mid twenties. It really is like stepping back in time but in a good way. The staff were great including insisting on an upgrade when we stayed an extra night. The restaurant is very good “

“We went to have morning coffee at this place with our drive Roy who is a Sri Lankan. You are asked to become a temporary member which was no problem except that Roy was not allowed to become a temporary member! Why – because he was just a driver or because he is a Sri Lankan? We declined the offer”

“If you are in the mood to spend a bit of dosh and aren’t too PC about Britains colonial past then definitely spend a night at The Hill Club. It’s like stepping back in time – G&Ts on the lawn staff in long white sarong with English names on their tags cigars and brandy in the smoking room. We had”

“Having not found a single review of the hotel before we went we weren’t sure what to expect and were worried this colonial English gentleman’s club would be too stuffy for 2 honeymooners in their mid-20’s. The exterior is certainly impressive if not imposing (it looks like a boarding school) and the gardens are beautifully kept. I should point out”

“I stayed here for just one night and was travelling with my wife and our son and his partner. Our views on this hotel were split between the sexes. The boys loved it and the girls thought it was not as good as some of the hotels we had stayed in. I loved it because of the atmosphere – taking”

“We had a very pleasant stay here for two nights in December 2008. We did not really find reason to complain about some of the things others have mentioned. Our room was fine the hotel was clean and the staff were friendly (though we didn’t really need much from them–we’re pretty low maintenance travelers). The restaurants were not especially exciting “

“Nice colonial ambiance but staff not well trained and unable to cope with complaints. For a tea expert hotel and in the main tea area of sri lanka they couldnt even make a pot of green tea but we were still charged for this fact! Rooms were acceptable but the bathrooms were tired and felt very dirty. There was only”

“We stayed in the St. Andrews Hotel as part of a week long tour of Sri Lanka. The hotel is a beautiful old colonial style building surrounded by lovely gardens. Inside the hotel is very rustic & charming with lots of nooks & crannies. The hotel is apparently based on the design of the Clubhouse in St Andrews Scotland. Our”

“Yes I said charming and old. But now let me come to the silly nitty gritty of things. We checked in for 2 nights the reception staff was pretty friendly . It’s more like the city has developed around the hotel and the church. The Hotel still retains much of its old chard initially we stayed in the old wing”

“Stayed here for 1 night as part of a Kuoni tour. First room we were shown to was damp and the bathroom was filthy with mould and also bath panel broken. Second room was slightly better but every time we turned the heater on it blew the electrics. (yes I did state “heater” – the hotel is 6000 feet up”

“I could have put up with the general shabbiness mentioned elsewhere and even the fact that there was a 5mm gap between the main window and its frame in our room but their inability to deal with real complaints properly is a sign of poor leadership and management. We arrived in late afternoon after travelling for most of the day”

“Came to the hotel a bit worried since some of the reviews were not too good and found a lovely hotel which I recomend wholeheartedly. The hotel is colonial and has a real character which is very nice to experience. The value for money is excellent- it is on the high end of a 3 star hotel – beautiful rooms “

“I loved this hotel. Yes it could do with some updating but the fact it hasn’t gives it a wonderful feel. We stayed here for one night on a 3 day excursion and was amazed. Our guide Alvis had mentioned that it was an area that had been an old British colony and this hotel gave a good emphasis on”

“We received a warm welcome at this hotel and were plied with lemongrass tea on arrival! The good service was maintained throughout our stay. The place really has a colonial feel and is comfortable. Some reviewers have remarked on the shabby nature of the rooms and the public areas but this did not apply to my stay. The charm of”
