The Royal Lotus Hotel

“We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as part of our sri lanka tour. It is rated as a 2 star hotel but better than hotels I have stayed in in other parts of the world. The location is great set on a beautiful lake where you can see the birds flying in and out. The hotel was very”

“Just returned from driving a large circle around Sri Lanka. This is rated as a 1 star hotel. Is definately better than most 3 stars i’ve stayed in all around the world. Beautiful location overlooking a large lake which is covered in birds in the early morning and even spotted a wild elephant. The staff were so freindly – the”

“Visit to the Royal Lotus Hotel in Giritale Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka the 6th of july 2008. We had some lovely days in this beautiful hotel. We especially appreciated the hospitality of the manager Jan Dirckze who is a very good birder and showed us many species on the grounds of his hotel. Besides that he took care that we could”

“Hard to summarise all the good points. It’s not five star of course but a decent 3-star at least. Stayed for one night of a roundtrip in a 2nd floor room. Impressive setup with hallway lots of fountains/ponds and a surprisingly big/cosy guestroom. E.g. a decent sofa reasonable-size TV decent bathroom (shower) etc. etc. Restaurant and terrace/pool also quite cosy:”

“We (two adults two children- 8 12) checked into this hotel on Christmas eve and was given a room towards the far end of Level 1 (Ground floor). The room was dark and toilet was gloomy. Beds were made but with dirty sheets (all three beds including the roll-away). The pillows had hair and children alerted to this. The linen in”

“I stayed at the Royal Lotus for 1 night in November 07 whilst on tour of Sri Lanka. Considering the 2 star rating the hotel has it was better than I expected and very good value for money considering the room rate. The reception and lounge areas are nicely decorated. The bedoom had a lovely view of the lake and”

“We spent 2 nights at this property in Dec – Jan 07 and celebrated the New Year there. Check-in was not so smooth because I made a reservation for the de luxe room and they did not have this information. Nevertheless we were swiftly moved to the deluxe floor and even received a giant fruit basked from the management for”

“We stayed at this hotel during our recent trip to Sri Lanka in Jan. 2006. Pros: The interior of the hotel is very well decorated. Rooms have hot running water spacious with stunning view of the lake. All rooms are facing the lake. Our laundry was done in a timely manner. The food at the hotel’s restaurant is very delicious”

“Really fed up after looking at the excessive prices and poor facilities offered by the Polonnaruwa Rest House (Government run) we despaired of finding a decent place to stay at affordable prices. This hotel is not in The Lonely Planet but should be. We followed TLP’s guide to The Lake View Inn (really small and TLP’s review is probably accurate!) “

Polonnaruwa Resthouse Hotel

“I spent a month working near Polonnaruwa and although I lived locally I spent many a happy and restfull evening at the Resthouse. You can relax on the terrace and take in a unique view of life on the lake (tank). The wildlife is ommnipresent with Egrets fruit bats monkeys and some VERY big lizards never too far away. For”

“Best thing about resthouse is the location. It can’t be beaten. Views over the lake are fantastic and you are right next to the main historical sites (literally in resthouse’s back yard). Food and drink are basic but good and excellent value. Rooms need renovation and service whilst friendly can be a bit varied. This is not top grade accommodation…. “

“The location is beautiful. nice to relax but the service is very poor. The staff gave the true colours of lazy attitude to work. The were looking for tips than to serve and make the name. Toilets are not clean and food is poor. The bread and break fast in U.K is far more better than this for the same”

“Service of this place has improved a lot than it used be. i visited the same place in last year and most of the things were terrible!!! I felt that they are not making use of the things they have!!! the view of the tank was magnificent and made me come here again so after visiting all my relations in”

“We were travelling round Sri Lanka for a few weeks and fancied a nice hotal for a night so according to the Lonely Planet this sounded like the place to be. The rooms are big with a great view over the tank but that’s about it. The staff were unhelpful pretty much from the moment we arrived. They made up”

“The Polonnaruwa Rest House has an amazing location but location doesn’t make up for the poor service bad food and gloomy rooms. i felt as though I was at a bad Motel 6. However don’t miss the museum that is within walking distance of this hotel. more “

“This hotel is in a fabulous position. It has views of the lake and the wonderful birdlife was a highlight. The room was ordinary but had a new air-conditioner and tea/coffee making facilities which is rare in Sri Lanka. The bathrooms desperately need renovation and a good clean (I am very fussy about bathrooms). The service was quick and attentive”

“Another place from my childhood. Eagerly I took my family to this Resthouse of fond memories asked for a tank view and was made to pay over $90 for a triple room B&B. The terrace outside our room was grubby shabby and not worthy of the price. Dirty recliners but a great view enhanced by the speeding mongoose. Room was”

“after having spoken to the hotel staff we were looking forward to our stay at this hotel as We were told that it is one of the best hotels in Polonnaruwa – Srilanka. “Had the ‘pleasure’ of staying at this ‘hotel’ for 4 nights when we did the cultural triangle. Out of the 7 hotels we stayed in during our entire trip of the island; this was by far the worst. In fact: in all my years of travelling this surely is in my top 3 of worst hotels. Let’s start with the”

“Stayed at the Sudu Araliya in April 2005 and regretted every minute. This was by far the worst hotel we’ve stayed in in Sri Lanka. It is unfortunately one of the “best” in Polonnaruwa – but there are nice hotels in Giritale and Sigirya Areas so if possible stay in that area and drive in. Of course if you do”

“The location of the hotel and the surroundings are very nice. Once upon a time this place might have been a nice place to stay but not anymore. We booked a room online and prepaid for it. Upon arrival they couldn’t find our booking. So we were first put in a room with dead geckos and bugs. We talked to”

“There is no doubt that Sri Lanka is suffering from a lack of tourists particualrly the hotels in the centre of the Island; at the time of our visit most likely because of the political situation & with the credit crunch it is likely to get worse. “I stayed a week at Deer Park in August 2008 and was slightly concerned that I’d be disappointed having read some poor reviews on this site. I wasn’t. Here’s my experience. Like everywhere else in Sri Lanka at the moment Deer Park is struggling with a lack of tourists so is currently only operating half the rooms and cannot sustain”

“This was my favourite hotel that we stayed in on our tour of Sri Lanka (out of 6). As the hotel is situated nearer the north of the country it isn’t as busy as other areas of Sri Lanka so it felt like our own private hideaway. The rooms are beutifully decorated and feel very luxurious. It feels like it’s”

“I visited the Deer park in February 2008 as part of our honeymoon having spent a week in the Maldives and wishing to return to Sri Lanka for the last time to explore nature wildlife and be cut off from the rest of the world. “We had 3 days at the Deer Park and at first I wasn’t impressed. A lot of the rooms seemed not to have been used for months and it gave the place a rather forlorn look. The first night we stayed we were two of only 8 people staying- again sitting in an empty dining room isn’t much fun. However”

“Fantastic hotel Brilliant rooms especially if you have one of the outside bathrooms. Great staff. Very clean. Good location for cultural traingle. Stayed one night. Would have loved to stayed longer here. more “

“We stayed at the Deer Park Hotel for 4 nights and had a fantastic time. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they made us feel at home. They were happy to adapt their service to us so that when we came home late they happily served us sandwiches in the bar”

“My wife and I stayed at The Deer Park for 5 nights in May as part of a tour of Sri Lanka for our Honeymoon. We booked with Kuoni and stayed in an Angsana Cottage. The Deer Park is a beautifully designed hotel which fits into it’s surroundings cleverly. This was particularly evident when we went for a boat ride”

“Our check in when we arrived at the hotel on 26 Feb 2007 after 9.00 pm was fairly smooth.
